At Fujimitsu we have been conducting research and development of functional foods that contain high concentrations of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

This research and development was initially carried out jointly with the National Fisheries University on commission from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2010. Today, we are continuing our own research and development with the aim of commercialization.

DHA and EPA, which are components found in abundance in blue-backed fish, are known to have excellent health benefits. These benefits include boosting brain functioning, suppressing the differentiation and growth of tumors, reducing cholesterol in the blood, suppressing the formation of blood clots, preventing heart attacks and cerebral thrombosis, and preventing the build up of neutral fat.

EPA and DHA are naturally present in fish oil. However, most of the EPA and DHA contained in fish oil are removed when making kamaboko and other processed fish products. It is washed away together with the fish skin, blood, and other unwanted parts during a processing step when the surimi is repeatedly rinsed in water. The aim of our R&D efforts is to create food products with heightened functionality through the intentional addition of EPA and DHA.

ISO 22000:
Commitment to food safety

ISO 22000 certification ISO 22000 certification

Fujimitsu is committed to food safety. Our quality management system covers the entire chain of activities from the procurement of raw materials through production to the distribution of finished products. We manufacture our food products in facilities that have obtained ISO 22000 certification, which is the standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization dealing with food safety.

Fujimitsu obtained its ISO 22000 certification in September 2008 from the Japan Audit and Certification Organization for Environment and Quality (JACO), which is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and the Japan Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (JAB).

Within the Fujimitsu Group, Hakata Uoka and Sankyu Suisan have also obtained ISO 22000 certification.
